A Mekong Tourism

A Mekong Tourism Development Association

The year 2008 is Mekong Delta National Tourism Year and the delta region is attracting many domestic and foreign visitors with a variety of tourism activities.

These activities have been helped by the formation of Vietnam's first regional tourism association, the Mekong Delta Tourism Association (MDTA), officially launched in June 2008.

The Mekong Delta consists of cities and provinces within an area of 40,000 square km with six hundred km of coastline.

The Delta is the gateway to a sub-region that has a very diverse culture. This region is densely packed with rivers and streams, immense fruit orchards and vast rice fields. In addition, it has floating market that is peculiar to this region. A number of places are known by visitors, a few being the Ninh Kieu wharf, Thoi Son and Au Islands and some traditional occupation villages. A visitor can discover a different aspect of nature during each visit. When visiting fruit orchards, they will be warmly welcomed by the orchard owners. In recent years, tourism companies have been trying to develop non-smoke industries in this region. The MDTA was born for this purpose. The association serves as a bridge between companies and local authorities and visitors, and between member companies, and it is concerned with management and government agency policies that would encourage tourism development.

The association links provinces and cities in this region to determine common development goals, diversify tourism products and build a suitable campaign. It also helps to create general development and set up tours which not only make use of the special character of a city or province but also promote common features of the region.According to Nguyen Viet Khanh, the director of Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Can Tho, the Mekong Delta Tourism Development Association has been desired by tourism companies for many years. The Can tho tourism sector has agreed to a tourism development plan with some provinces like An Giang, Kien Giang, Dong Thap, Tra - Vinh and Hau Giang and the Mekong Delta Tourism Festival and the Mekong National Tourism Year is evidence of this cooperation. Previously, such cooperation existed only on paper but now there is an actual diversification of tourism products and regional advertising.

At the moment, the association is most concerned with the following activities: connecting domestic and foreign businesses for tourism development in the region, creating a regional tourism image and a common source of regional information, working with local authorities to devise a tourism development plan, cooperating with other agencies to create human resource training programs and raising the consciousness of local people with regards to environmental protection. All of these actions together can result in comprehensive tourism development within the Mekong Delta.
