Beauty contest tells it straight - Miss Angel 2008

Miss Angel 2008, an unofficial beauty contest for gay men and transsexuals held last Sunday in Hcm city was similar to similar kinds of events in Viet nam except for its focus on HIV/AIDS prevention.

Ten members of the Blue Sky Club, a club for gays at the city’s AIDS Prevention Centre, joined the contest to showcase their femininity as well as seek sympathy from their families.

Each contestant was judged in three categories: evening-gown performance, interviews about social knowledge and HIV/AIDS. At the end of the contest, a judging board consisting of make-up experts and psychologists, named To Phuong Nhi the winner.

The Miss Angel contest was designed to improve the participants’ knowledge about HIV prevention. It also gave transsexuals a chance to share their hidden dreams through heart-to-heart talks.

"We were born with a male body, but since I was small I wished I was a woman. I know it’s really hard to gain sympathy from other people. But we hope the competition will help let the world know that we are like other normal people. We love. We hate. And we also have a desire to contribute to our community," said Thien Kim, a contestant.

Their stories have managed to play upon the heartstrings of the pageant’s audience, who are their friends, family and curious people as well.

Nguyen Huu Sinh, an audience member from Binh Duong Province, was among the curious. He ran across the contest’s news via the internet and travelled from his hometown to Hcm city to witness the event.

"I think they’re pretty and nice. The competition does help me be more sympathetic to the gay’s world. I was really amazed at their heartfelt sharing about their dreams of love and family," said Sinh.
