Code red for wildlife - Vietnam Red Data Book
The number of endangered wildlife species in Vietnam has increased in recent years, according to the latest edition of the Vietnam Red Data Book.
The number of endangered wildlife species identified last year has risen to 882, from the 715 named over the period 1992-96 covered by the last edition of the book. Released in Hanoi last week, the Vietnam Red Data Book 2007 was produced jointly by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The biodiversity of Vietnam has changed because of rapid social and economic development, according to Professor Dang Ngoc Thanh, who led the Red Data Book project in Vietnam. Distressingly a large number of species previously listed as vulnerable have now become endangered. Furthermore, a high percentage of this group has become critically endangered. On the bright side a number of species that were previously thought extinct, or extinct in the wild, have been found in neighbouring countries.
Creatures, such as particular species of pheasant, python and crocodile, have all been removed from the critically endangered list thanks to conservation efforts. The Red Data Book also provides an assessment and categorisation as well as solutions for recovering the community size of those species that are experiencing significant losses. “It has been 15 years since we compiled the first version of the Red Data Book.
The country’s biodiversity status has changed a lot because of its rapid social and economic development,” said Professor Thanh. “IUCN’s criteria for categorising species threatened status have also been changed. The revision of the book therefore adequately reflects the current biodiversity status of Vietnam.”
According to Doctor Vu Van Trieu, IUCN representative in Vietnam, the development of the Vietnam Red Data Book 2007 greatly contributes to the assessment of the current status as well as the future development forecast of Vietnam’s biodiversity.
“This information provides impetus for the finalising and implementation of Vietnam’s Biodiversity Law. We are glad that Vietnam is following the best international practices by conducting an up-to-date biodiversity assessment,” said Trieu. The Vietnam Red Data Book 2007 was developed over five years by a team of more than 70 scientists from 10 national and international organisations.
In addition to updating surveys and research as recent as 2005, the documentation development project also conducted a review of all contested references and organised consultative workshops to improve the document’s quality.
