Literature for children: Lack of everything - vietnam chidren book

Lacking professionalism and whole hearted writers and weak advertising has meant only a few attractive works for children are available for children on the domestic market.
In recent years, there is a lack of  many works by domestic writers for children and therefore, successful works are very rare. Noteworthy is the “Kinh Van Hoa” (Kaleidoscope), ‘Chuyen xu Liang Biang” (Story in Liang Biang) and recently “Cho Toi Mot Ve Di Tuoi Tho” (Give Me a Ticket to Childhood) by Nguyen Nhat Anh. Or the work “Vua Nham Mat Vua Mo Cua So” (Closing Eyes while Opening Door” by Nguyen Ngoc Thuan won both domestic and international prizes. One year ago, “Cha va Con” (Father and Son) by writer Ho Phuong became a rare phenomenon of the literature in general and children’s book in particular with a publishing number of 10,000 copies.

Veteran writers such as To Hoai, Doan Gioi and Nguyen Huy Tuong were very successful in writing books for children. Their works are even now children's favourites.Books “De Men Phieu Luu Ky’ (The Cricket’s Diary) or “Dat Rung Phuong Nam” (The Southern Forestry Land) are continuously reprinted.

Among veteran writers, Tran Hoai Duong has spent his whole life creating works for children. Following him is writer Nguyen Nhat Anh who has helped raise a “reading wave” for children.

According to writer Le Phuong Lien, head of the children’s literature department of the Vietnam Writers’ Association, at the moment there is a movement of writing for the youth but not for children. Along with few young writers who want to become a children’s writer. No young writers joined the creation camp for children recently held by the Writers’ Association.

Writer Le Phuong Lien said the passion and contribution for children’s books by veteran writers is acknowledged but it’s hard to persuade them to get more in touch with young people's feeling as they have become fixed in their own style.

The domestic literature for children for dozens of years “old” and are often full of dogma. Maybe this is because older writers still have to shoulder the duty which should have been passed onto younger writers.

Another issue is the lack of promotional work. The success of writer Nguyen Nhat Anh with Kaleidoscope, Story in Liang Biang and Give Me a Ticket to Childhood is partly thanks to advertising techniques.

The participation of press, forums, publishers and critics have contributed to creating a reading fever for those works.

One year ago, the Kim Dong publishing house recorded the rare phenomenon in children’s literature when it published 10,000 copies of the “Father and Son” by writer Ho Phuong. The book, featuring the childhood of President Ho chi minh has been successful published thanks to its publicity drive.

Writer Le Phuong Lien held that books can be welcomed more by Vietnamese children if they get the information.
